The University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) brings together outstanding clinical facilities of the University of Chicago Hospitals with the education and research facilities of the Pritzker School of Medicine and the Biological Sciences Division of the University of Chicago. The UCMC resides entirely on the 190 acre University of Chicago campus approximately seven miles south of Chicago’s business district. Having recently completed expansion with the opening of the new Comer Children’s Hospital facilities and the Ellen & Melvin Gordon Center for Integrative Science, work continues on additional research buildings (Jules and Gwen Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery scheduled to open in 2009) and construction is about to begin on a new hospital pavilion which will result in the largest facility on the medical campus.
Annually named to the US News & World Report list of the best hospitals in the USA, UCMC has the further distinction of being one of the 19 awardees of the “Honor Roll”, an elite group of facilities that received top scores in six or more specialties. The clinical facilities at the UCMC currently include the Mitchell Hospital, a 395 bed adult hospital facility, the Comer Children’s Hospital, with 155 beds, and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, the 525,000 square foot outpatient clinic and surgery facility for the University faculty. All physicians on the staff at these facilities are full-time faculty at the University of Chicago. The Department of Radiology operates facilities in all of these locations providing care and education in conjunction with our colleagues in the medical center.
