Section of Breast Imaging
The Section of Breast Imaging performs high-quality screening and diagnostic mammograms for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and for the evaluation of benign breast disease. Using state-of-the-art-imaging technology, the section also performs high-resolution ultrasound, pre-operative needle localization, ductography, and both ultrasound and digital sterotactic needle core biopsies as an excellent alternative to open surgical biopsy. Current and future areas of research include the development of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) and digital mammography.
Our expert mammography technologists and breast imaging radiologists are committed to providing personal and compassionate care to all patients. In addition to quality imaging services, the clinicians are frequently asked to offer second opinions, especially for patients considered to be high-risk, and those with complex breast problems. In conjunction with the University Hospital Breast Clinic, the section sees a number of patients from throughout the Midwest.
The University of Chicago Breast Imaging program complies with all applicable federal certification standards, and our board-certified radiologists are dedicated breast imaging specialists. Patients with symptoms will have a complete diagnostic work-up including mammography, ultrasound and physical examination as needed. The Section of Breast Imaging offers integrated treatment planning for breast cancer patients. Our specialized treatment team including surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, oncologists, and radiation therapists works to develop tailored imaging and treatment programs on an individualized patient basis.
The screening and diagnostic breast imaging areas are located on the first and second floors of the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine. Screening mammograms are also performed off-site at the University of Chicago Physicians Group downtown facility located at 222 N. LaSalle.
